Local Services Ads vs Google Ads: Why Trades Run Both

One charges per lead and ranks you on reviews. The other charges per click and gives you control. What each is good at, and where each fails.

These are two different products that happen to live on the same search results page, and comparing them as if they were rival versions of the same thing is how businesses end up choosing badly.

Local Services Ads charge you for a lead and rank providers through an auction that weighs the bid, the likelihood of producing a lead and the quality of the provider’s profile. Regular Search ads charge you for a click and hand you a different set of controls. If your trade is eligible for Local Services Ads and you have reviews and someone who answers the phone, start there. Then add Search for everything Local Services Ads cannot reach, which is more than most people expect.

How Local Services Ads actually work

They sit at the very top of the results page, above the regular text ads, and they look nothing like an ad. A name, a rating, a review count, a badge, and a call button.

Four mechanics matter.

You pay per lead, not per click. A call that connects, or a message, produces a charge. Somebody browsing your profile and leaving does not. That shifts the risk in a way that is genuinely different from every other paid channel, and it changes how you should think about your landing experience, because there is not one.

You have to pass a check to run them. Google verifies the business before the badge appears, and the requirements differ by category. Home service trades go through license and insurance verification and background checks and carry the Google Guaranteed badge, which puts a Google-backed guarantee behind jobs booked through the ad, subject to its own limits and claim process. Professional service categories go through a screening check instead and carry a Google Screened badge, without the money-back guarantee. The verification takes real time and real paperwork, and the badge lapses if your insurance or license lapses, which catches people out.

You do not choose keywords. You choose job types and a service area, and Google matches searches to them. There is no keyword list, no negative keyword list in the sense you are used to, no ad copy to write, no landing page to build. This is either a relief or a straitjacket depending on how specific your business is.

Ranking runs on an auction and profile quality. Google’s current Local Services Ads ranking guidance names the bid, responsiveness, the context and relevance of the search, and profile quality. Profile quality includes ratings, review count, average response time, images and completed verification checks. Missing calls do not just cost possible jobs; Google says they may negatively affect responsiveness.

That last point is the one to sit with. Local Services Ads reward operations. If your phone gets answered during the hours you claim and your reviews keep coming in, the channel works with you. If calls regularly go to voicemail at eleven on a Tuesday, you lose opportunities and may weaken one of the responsiveness signals used in the auction.

Google now assesses lead quality automatically. Leads it identifies as invalid or low quality may be left uncharged or credited after review, generally without a manual dispute. Use the lead feedback survey to flag poor matches and improve the account’s settings, but do not budget around credits for out-of-area or unselected job-type leads: Google’s current credit guidance says those two categories are no longer supported for credits.

Where regular Search ads win

Local Services Ads take the top of the page for a narrow set of high-intent searches. Search ads cover everything else, and here is what they give you that the other cannot.

Keyword control. You decide which searches you pay for and, more importantly, which ones you refuse. The single biggest lever in a local ad account is the negative keyword list, and Local Services Ads do not have one. If you do not run paid search yet, negative keywords for local business is where that work starts.

Message control. You write the headline. You can name the service, the neighborhood, the guarantee, the availability, the thing that makes you the obvious call for this one job. A Local Services Ad shows your rating and your name and that is the pitch.

A landing page. You send the click somewhere you control, built for that service, with your proof and your form on it. That page can be tested. It also produces a lead record, which matters enormously for measurement.

Coverage of everything outside the taxonomy. Local Services Ads run in the categories and areas Google has opened, with the job types Google has defined. Plenty of real trades and plenty of real services do not map cleanly onto that list. If half your revenue comes from a service that is not a listed job type, Search is the only paid route to it.

The searches before the buying one. Comparison, cost, materials, “how do I know if I need,” repair versus replace. Local Services Ads are built for the person ready to book. Search can meet the person two weeks earlier.

Measurement into your own systems. Conversion tracking, call tracking, offline conversion import, and a clear line from search term to booked job. Local Services Ads report leads in their own app, which is useful, but it is a narrower view than a properly instrumented Search account.

Remarketing and brand defense. Neither exists in Local Services Ads.

Why most trades run both

Not as a hedge. For three concrete reasons.

The inventory is capped. There are only so many searches at the very top of the page for your job type in your area, and only so many advertisers shown. Once you are winning your share of those, the growth is not there. More budget in the same box does not manufacture more searches.

They catch different moments. Somebody typing “emergency plumber” at ten at night is a Local Services Ads lead. Somebody typing “how much to replace a water heater” is not, and is worth having a conversation with anyway. Running only the first means you meet every customer at the point where price is the only remaining variable.

Together they take more of the page. Appearing at the top in the Local Services block and again in the text ads and again in the map results is a legitimate, if unglamorous, advantage. Three appearances read as an established business.

The sequencing that usually makes sense: get Local Services Ads verified and running first if you are eligible, because the cost per lead is usually more forgiving and the setup is lighter. Get your review flow and your call answering solid, since both are ranking inputs there. Then build the Search account around the services and the search stages Local Services Ads cannot reach.

The honest cautions

Lead quality varies, so review the lead report and settings. Wrong numbers, poor matches and calls from outside the intended area can still happen. Check what was charged, what was automatically credited and what remains in review. Submit feedback on bad matches, then correct service areas, job types and categories where the pattern points to an account-setting problem.

You cannot fix a bad phone process with either channel. Both put strangers on your phone. If they reach voicemail, you have bought nothing, and in the Local Services case you have also damaged your ranking there. Know what happens to a call at four in the afternoon on a Friday before you turn either one on.

Measurement is on you. Paid search leads that arrive by phone are the hardest thing in local marketing to attribute honestly, and it applies to both channels. We wrote that up in tracking phone leads.

Neither is a substitute for the free asset. Both channels sit alongside your organic and map presence, and the comparison that owners actually agonize over is usually the paid versus organic one. That is a different question with a different answer and we covered it in local SEO vs Google Ads.

What to do first

Check eligibility for your category and area, because that decision gets made for you. If Local Services Ads are available, start the verification now rather than after you have decided, since it is the slowest step and it costs nothing to have completed.

While that runs, count your reviews and be honest about your call answering. Both are ranking inputs in the channel you are about to enter, and both are cheaper to fix before you are paying per lead than after.

Then build one tight Search campaign around your highest-value service, with a real landing page and a working negative list, and treat it as the place you learn what your market actually searches for.

If you want that built and run rather than figured out on evenings, it is part of our marketing services, and we do this work with Austin trades through Austin pay per click management.
